What a Vegan Learned While Navigating the Health Care System

Question conventional medicine more and keep an open mind regarding alternatives — it could save you unnecessary pain and thousands of dollars.

Recently, I took a journey through the health care system that I never expected.

You see, I was proactive about my health. Having been a vegan for twenty-four and a half years, I strongly felt that I had reduced my risk of depending on the health care system. However, I learned that we all may have to navigate that system at some point.

I learned several lessons on…

How I Found God by Keana W. Mitchell

One of the many things that I am grateful for is God and his amazing love for me. As a child who grew up in the church, I remember being terrified of him because I thought if I did anything wrong, I was doomed and destined to hell. I thought that I had to be perfect and do everything right or God wouldn’t love me. These types of thoughts followed me all the way from my childhood to early adulthood and during this time I struggled with being angry at God and…

Growing up as a child there was absolutely nothing that my mom couldn’t do. She cooked, cleaned, homeschooled my sisters and I (until we got in the second grade and went to school), she introduced us to music, and the list could go on and on. Aside from all these amazing things that she did the thing that I remember the most is that she loved us and did what she could to make sure we were happy and safe. She provided an environment where asking questions was not looked down upon but encouraged. We could speak our minds freely…

Every year around Christmas Eve, I think back to our ill-fated night in a Red Cross Shelter in Northeast Pennsylvania. We were traveling to Manlius, New York (a small village outside Syracuse, New York) to spend Christmas with my wife’s (then girlfriend’s) parents and her 2 brothers traveling from California, and 2 sister’s traveling from nearby in upstate New York and Hartford, Connecticut. The two sisters made it; the rest of us did not.

At that time, I believed the difference between tragedy and comedy is the benefit of time (rather than mindset) and this remains true today in this…

Driving around Asheville and listening to the stories of the murder of George Floyd, and the protests that are springing up around the country, my heart aches.

I am sorry to say that the escalation of violence against blacks was not unexpected, and the ensuing protests and riots understandable. Over the past few years the ugly racist underbelly of this country has been brought out into the light as the rise of white supremacy ideology has made it to the main- stream. We have become a tinderbox waiting for the spark that will trigger revolution.

I am a white, educated, middle class woman who can freely walk into any store, buy a home in any neighborhood and be welcome, and drive around without fear of being stopped…

Throughout life, some of my best memories were the times I spent hanging out under the stars. Sweet memories of childhood sleepovers in my parent’s backyard, big sky evening vistas in Montana, and wilderness white water rafting adventures with friends camping along the western rivers of our country. The magic of the night sky fueled my curiosity and imagination.

I Know The Big Dipper

My knowledge of astronomy is minimal, but my pride in being able to identify the Big Dipper, the North Star and the Milky Way is solid. I know the Big Dipper. To this day, the first…

I envision a world where love rules, where people can boldly cross the lines that divide us and come together to build a new world and a new way of being that works for all.

We turn on the news and the barrage of stories overwhelms…

I was able in less than a year to overcome an incurable disease by ignoring the advice of my specialist Dr., surgeon, and leading foundation for my disease.

Last November I was told by a GI specialist and surgeon I had moderate to severe Crohn’s disease with peri-anal fistula and would need multiple surgeries combined with an IV prescription of a drug costing thousands of dollars every three months for the rest of my life. Not only was the financial cost great but I learned the drug would suppress my immune system, possibly cause heart failure, skin cancer, deadly infections……
